HANTS SHORE
On the southern shore of the Minas Basin and Cobequid Bay is Nova Scotia's best kept maritime secret: the HANTS SHORE. The striking beauty of its coastline is complimented with a panorama of wooded hills and farms. The dramatic rise and fall of the world's highest tides creates the famous Tidal Bore in many of the area's rivers. The fertile waters of the area are home to many species of marine mammals and fish. Many species of birds breed along the HANTS SHORE and the tidal flats provide a vast feeding and staging area for many migratory species.
Cherished by the Mi'kmaq and the Acadians, the area was eventually settled by the New England Planters and Loyalists who built a thriving, world-famous shipbuilding industry. Every community has its own history of men and ships in addition to the larger, more well-known shipyards of Maitland, and Newport Landing.
Some of the hamlets along the West Hants part of the Hants Shore are: Avondale, Belmont, the Burlingtons, Cambridge, Cheverie, Kempt, Newport Landing, Poplar Grove and Summerville.
